Melco was established by Makoto Maki in 1975 in Japan. Maki, an enthusiastic audiophile, established the company to design and manufacture the finest audio components of the time - the undoubted masterpiece of the Melco line being the turntable, introduced into the UK in 1980, which set new standards in music reproduction.

From those early beginnings Melco developed into the largest computer peripherals manufacturer in Japan, offering advanced products based on rigorous R&D, including Wireless routers, Ethernet Data Switches and storage devices such as NAS drives.

Now the Company is proud to revive the highly-respected Melco brand, offering discerning audiophiles high technology networked audio components in the spirit of those much revered early Melco products, while incorporating the very latest research into reliable high performance networked devices and storage.

'Melco' stands for Maki Engineering Laboratory Company.

Concept Introduction

Audio enthusiasts always understood that the music source was the most critical component in a complete Hi-Fi system. The finest performers, the most masterly record producers, and the best engineering, produces the very best source material to delight music lovers. Remember those carefully crafted turntables, arms and cartridges?

With the introduction of CD a new era of Digital Music was born, initially limited by the capabilities of the CD carrier. Still audiophiles appreciated the need for the finest CD mastering, the best CD player mechanisms and the most advanced DAC technologies to enjoy the best musical experience.

With the advent of High Resolution Digital Music, we can now avoid the limitations of the physical CD, and can access music data as it exists in the recording studio or editing suite without any limitation. Just as the artists intended.

Many exciting players now exist to allow enjoyment of those High Resolution files.

While this is all good news however, the concept of the true 'source component' has been lost, as the distribution, storage, and delivery of the large Hi-Res music files to the player are now entrusted to computer type devices and technologies. This is unfortunate as there are a great many aspects of Digital Music that cannot possibly be addressed by computer peripherals, and so it is not possible to fully enjoy the original musical experience as the performers and producers would have hoped.

The only real solution is to create a true 'Source Component' for High Resolution Digital Music including accessing the Hi-Res music, storing and managing the music, and making the Hi-Res music available to the chosen Digital Music Player.

So, developed by audiophiles, for audiophiles, Melco is proud to present the world's first true High Resolution Digital Music source - with none of the compromises of the computer peripherals market.

With a real source component to access, store and deliver Hi-Res music, Melco offers the opportunity for the music lover to finally enjoy studio quality Hi-Res digital music without any compromise.

Concept of Digital Music

Compact Discs are very limited in their capacity to store music - just over 70 minutes of 16 bit 44.1kHz Digital Music - which is the Digital Music standard of over 30 years ago. Far more realistic. High Resolution Digital Music simply will not fit onto a CD or anything similar, and exists as large data files, much like digital pictures or electronic books.

By comparison, a CD was bought from a shop, was stored on a shelf, and was loaded into a CD player to enjoy the music. Today's far superior Hi-res music is purchased and downloaded over the Internet, and is stored in data storage.

To play the music, the data is transferred to a player using either a data network (Ethernet) in which case we talk of 'streaming' the music. or can be played on a computer or portable device. which has a local music player and 'sees' the music in the data storage. Connections may be Ethernet or USB.
